Multi piece monuments are exactly what the name implies. They are basically stacked stone components of different shapes and sizes place together. They rely heavily on stable level ground to keep them standing in place. Often, they are secured with the use of metal pins, mortar, lead, or more recently a setting compound between the layers. Many times we encounter a multi piece monument with none of the above materials used, just dry stacked on top of one another. Resetting of these monuments often require the use of hoists, pullies, levers, ropes, chains, and sometimes cranes depending on the size and weight. the most common adverse conditions encountered with this type of monument is fallen trees coming in contact and unstable earth beneath it. Resetting these monuments will vary in scope depending on what is needed to preserve it. Sometimes stone repairs can be performed to damaged components and reset where they came from. Other times, I will disassemble the entire monument, perform necessary repairs to components, prepare a proper compacted area for it to sit on, then it is reassembled using methods of securing it as required by the size, weight and height.
